The Central Library in Copley Square encompasses two buildings, both landmarks. The historic McKim building, designed by architect Charles Follen McKim and opened in 1895, houses the Library’s distinguished research and special collections. Known for its classical serenity and elegance, it features historical artwork by Daniel Chester French, John Singer Sargent, and more, as well as the magnificent Bates Hall reading room. The Boylston Street Building (formerly called the Johnson Building), designed by Philip Johnson and opened in 1972, underwent an award-winning renovation by William Rawn Associates, Architects, Inc. reopening in 2016. The transformed 21st century library space features a broadcast studio and innovation center.

Stallergenes Greer Allergen Walks

Saturday July 27: 12:15 – 13:15
Sunday July 28: 06:45 – 07:45

Every day you treat your patients for allergenic pollens that are found out in the environment, but can you identify these plants, the sources from which the pollens come from, and describe their significance in atopic dermatitis?

Plants and plant pollens are important sources of allergens that can affect pets as well as humans. The Allergen Walk is designed to introduce participants to the types of plants that may contribute to their patients’ allergic conditions.

Led by our very knowledgeable and experienced scientist & botany specialist, we will explore the area around the convention location to learn about the types of plants that produce allergic pollens and how they are collected and processed for use in your clinic.

Some key points noted on allergen walks include:

  • Pollen production and pollen characteristics
  • Male and female flowers and their relationship to allergenicity
  • Seasonality of pollen production by different species
  • Cross-reactivity of allergens from different species
  • How pollen is collected
  • How pollen is processed into sterile products for testing and treatment
  • Allergen sources other than plant pollen such as fungi and insects

Following an allergen walk you will be better able to explain the role of plants and other species in your patients’ allergic signs, which may help you as you determine diagnosis and treatment for them.

**Each walk will be limited to 40 participants.
